- Can I see where the puppy/kitten was actually born and raised, and meet at least the mother?
- What health testing have the breeding parents had for conditions common in this breed?
- How many litters a year does this kennel produce, and of how many breeds?
- What happens if I can no longer keep the animal later in life — will the breeder take it back?
- Can I get the kennel's registration details in writing before any money changes hands?
Red flags to watch for
- Several breeds or a constant stream of litters advertised — a real hobby kennel breeds occasionally, not year-round
- No willingness to let you visit or see the parents in person
- Pressure to pay a deposit immediately or "before someone else takes it"
- No pedigree/registration paperwork, or vague answers about which registry it's from
- A price far below the breed's normal range — health testing and proper care aren't free
Consider adoption first
A shelter animal needs a home just as much, often at a fraction of the cost — and Lithuania has real, reputable shelters actively rehoming dogs and cats.
